GEORGE Russell reminded everyone that this year's Formula 1 title fight has only just begun, converting pole position into victory at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday to climb back to second in the Drivers' Championship heading to another pivotal Sprint weekend at Silverstone.

The Mercedes driver controlled proceedings from lights out to the checkered flag, but his second victory of the season came only after surviving a tense strategic battle that saw just over three seconds separate himself, Max Verstappen, and championship leader Kimi Antonelli at the finish.

Russell made a clean getaway from pole and steadily built his advantage while the fight behind him intensified.

One of the race's early highlights came on Lap 22 when former title rivals Lewis Hamilton and Verstappen resumed their wheel-to-wheel duel. Verstappen swept past the Ferrari into Turn 3, only for Hamilton to immediately fight back around the outside at Turn 4 before the Red Bull driver finally secured the position.

Red Bull then committed Verstappen to an alternate strategy, extending his second stint as he briefly inherited the race lead while Russell and Antonelli completed their pit cycles.

The race took another twist when Antonelli made what appeared to be his final stop on Lap 51, just one lap before a Virtual Safety Car was deployed on Lap 52. Mercedes' mistimed strategy denied the championship leader a significantly cheaper pit stop under neutralized conditions, handing Verstappen a crucial opportunity.

Red Bull responded by bringing Verstappen in on Lap 49 for his second and final stop, fitting fresh hard tires that allowed the Dutchman to rejoin in third with enough pace to challenge over the closing laps.

Antonelli spent the remainder of the race hunting Verstappen down, rapidly closing the gap in the final laps, but ultimately ran out of time as the Red Bull driver held on to second by less than two seconds.

Russell, meanwhile, remained untroubled out front and clipped Verstappen and Antonelli in a finish covered by just over three seconds.

"It’s incredible to be back on the top step. It’s been a little while, so I’m definitely going to enjoy this one this evening," Russell said.

“The tough races definitely test you psychologically, and these last two weekends for me have been vitally important to remind myself I can do it."

Oscar Piastri led McLaren in fourth ahead of Hamilton, while Isack Hadjar continued his impressive campaign in sixth for Red Bull Racing. Lando Norris followed in seventh, with Charles Leclerc finishing eighth for Ferrari and the Racing Bulls pair of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad rounding out the points.

After briefly slipping behind Hamilton following Barcelona, Russell reclaimed second in the Drivers' Championship with 131 points. Antonelli still leads comfortably with 171 despite finishing third, while Hamilton slipped to third with 125 after placing fifth in Spielberg.

With another Sprint weekend immediately awaiting at Silverstone, Russell has injected fresh life into a title fight that had threatened to become a one-driver procession.

One commanding drive later, the Briton heads home with momentum firmly back on his side.
