GEORGE Russell delivered a timely reminder that he remains firmly in the Formula 1 title fight this season, producing a stunning lap to claim pole position for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix on Saturday.
The Mercedes driver secured his third pole of the season with a 1:14.679 effort in Q3, edging Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton by just 0.064 of a second while teammate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli settled for third.

The result came at an important moment in the earlygoings of the title race. Following his difficult Monaco weekend, Russell dropped to third in the Drivers' Championship behind Antonelli and Hamilton.

On Saturday, however, he responded in emphatic fashion by qualifying ahead of both rivals and putting himself in prime position to claw back valuable points.
Hamilton briefly looked on course for Ferrari's first pole of the season after setting the provisional benchmark during the closing minutes of Q3, but Russell found extra pace on his final run to snatch top spot.
Antonelli improved late as well, but could only manage third, more than three tenths off his teammate's pole-winning effort.
The session's biggest drama came in the final minutes when Charles Leclerc crashed during Q3, bringing out yellow flags and ending the Ferrari driver's challenge to wind up 10th on the grid after reaching the pole shootout.
Reigning world champion Lando Norris joins championship leader Antonelli in the second row. Max Verstappen qualified fifth ahead of his Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar, while Oscar Piastri slid to seventh.
Liam Lawson continued Racing Bulls' strong showing in eighth, Nico Hulkenberg put his Audi ninth and Leclerc completed the top 10 despite his late accident.

After watching Antonelli build a commanding championship advantage through five consecutive victories, Russell finally landed a meaningful blow of his own.
More importantly, he will start ahead of the two drivers directly above him in the standings, as he looks to reignite his title challenge in Barcelona.
