Formula One applies for trademark to ‘Philippine Grand Prix,’ according to report

A FORMULA One race in the Philippines?

British media outlet Independent reported on Saturday that Formula One owner Liberty Media has applied for the trademark of the name ‘Philippine Grand Prix.’

F1, according to Independent sources, filed the trademark application with the Intellectual Property Office last January 7 along with the name ‘Manila Grand Prix.’

Southeast Asia has one current F1 host, with the Singapore GP being held at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, while Sepang used to host the Malaysian GP. The Vietnamese Grand Prix is set in 2020.

A race track is set to be built in Lubao, Pampanga, the Pradera Verde Racing Circuit, with engineer and former race car driver Hermann Tilke as designer, although it seems F1 is not in the immediate plans.

The proposed circuit is expected to get FIA (International Automobile Federation) Grade 2 certification, which means it can hold the big international races except for Formula One.

Last November with little fanfare, Tilke, went to the country to make a presentation about the design of the Pradera Verde Racing Circuit. Tilke designer has worked on race tracks in Abu Dhabi, Malaysia, Bahrain and China.

The race track is targeted to be competed in 2021.
