KIMI Antonelli continued his remarkable run in the 2026 Formula 1 season, snatching a dramatic Monaco Grand Prix pole position with a stunning final lap that denied Max Verstappen and capped another statement performance from the championship leader.
The Mercedes driver appeared out of contention for pole entering the final moments of Q3, as the benchmark time changed hands repeatedly among the frontrunners.

Hometown hero Charles Leclerc initially thrilled the home crowd by moving to provisional pole, only for Verstappen to respond and take over the top spot moments later.
Lewis Hamilton then briefly inserted himself into the fight before Antonelli produced what he later described as a 'magic lap' to stop the clock at 1:12.051 and seize pole by just 0.043 seconds over Verstappen.
"I was able to put it all together and it was such a close qualifying with Max. I think in the first run of Q3 there was just one millisecond between us, but I knew the last lap was good and was just hoping that it would be enough. It was very close and I’m very happy with that," he said.
"It was one of those laps we call the magic lap."

Leclerc looked poised to challenge again on his final run, but clipped the barrier and damaged his Ferrari, ending his bid and leaving him fourth on the grid behind teammate Hamilton.
Frontrow seat
The pole was Antonelli's fourth of the season and carried added historical significance, as the 19-year-old became the first Italian driver to claim pole in Monaco since Jarno Trulli in 2004, while also strengthening his bid for a fifth straight Grand Prix victory on a circuit where track position is often everything.
Verstappen settled for second after briefly appearing headed for pole, while Hamilton delivered Ferrari's best qualifying result of the season at third. Leclerc completed the second row in fourth despite his late brush with the wall.

Isack Hadjar continued his impressive campaign with fifth for Red Bull, while George Russell could only manage sixth and finished nearly four tenths slower than his Mercedes teammate.
Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris followed in seventh and eighth for McLaren, with the remaining Top 10 spots going to Franco Colapinto and Arvid Lindblad.
With overtaking notoriously difficult around the streets of Monte Carlo, Antonelli's late qualifying heroics may have given him his best opportunity yet to extend a winning streak that has already rewritten parts of the F1 record book.
