MIXED martial arts fighters Frankie 'The Answer' Edgar and Urijah 'The California Kid' Faber, the protagonists in the main card of the historic Ultimate Fighting Championship Fight Night Manila, will be formally introduced in a press conference at the Solaire Resort & Casino on Tuesday.
The first meeting between the two Americans in the octagon will showcase the first UFC event in the Philippines which will be held at the Mall of Asia Arena, an event that will surely draw fans in what has become one of the world’s fastest-growing sports.
Also in attendance will be Kenneth Berger, managing director and ECP for UFC Asia, as well as SM Lifestyle Entertainment Inc. executives.
The 33-year old Edgar reigned as a former UFC lighweight champion, besting BJ Penn via unanimous in UFC 112. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has a record of 17 wins (five knockouts and four submissions), four losses and one draw. He is currently riding a three-win streak.
Faber, 35, won the World Extreme Cagefighting Featherweight Championship at WEC 19 in 2006, a title which he held for two years. He was ranked No. 3 in official UFC bantamweight rankings and will be making a return to the featherweight class. His MMA record stands at 32 wins (seven KO, 19 submission) and seven losses and has won six of his last seven fights.
Both Americans have similar build, standing five feet and six inches and weighing 145 lbs. and will figure in a five-round featherweight bout.
In one of the anticipated undercard matches, Filipino fighter Roldan Sangcha-an will battle Jon delos Reyes of Guam in their flyweight match. The Baguio City native hopes to rebound from his first loss against Richie Vaculik in UFC Fight Night in New Zealand last year.
Ticket prices for the May 16 event will be announced during the press conference and will be made available for sale on March 13 at SM Tickets and www.smticket.scom.
