BJ Penn will finally make his comeback fight to the delight of Filipino fans as the UFC confirmed the bout between the Hall of Famer and Ricardo Lamas as the main event of Fight Night Manila 2 on October 15 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The five-round featherweight bout marks the return of ‘The Prodigy’ after two years since losing in July 2014 to Frankie Edgar, who won the last headline bout against Urijah Faber when the UFC first staged Fight Night in the country in May 2015.
Penn is no stranger to fight fans all over the world as he’s one of only two multi-division champions (lightweight, welterweight) ever in the UFC. He’s also the longest reigning lightweight champ in the league. He was inducted to the Hall of Fame last year but decided to take another crack in the UFC in January, but was suspended for six months after admitting to an IV infusion that was in violation of Usada rules last March.
With the suspension ending September 25, Penn is all cleared to face number 4 featherweight Lamas in Manila. ‘The Bully’ once fought for the belt against then-champion Jose Aldo in UFC 169, but has since struggled to get another crack at the title with a 3-2 record after that loss.
The All-American collegiate wrestler lost his most recent fight in UFC 199 against Max Holloway, and is looking for a high profile win over the MMA legend Penn to get back on track.
