MACAU – The contrast between Filipina fighter Jomary Torres and her Thai foe in Rika Ishige hasn’t been more evident in the press conference for ONE’s Kings and Conquerors fight card held at the Venetian Hotel and Casino, Thursday here.
The low-key Torres was visibly shaken when the attention and the spotlight turned to her in the primer for the organization’s biggest event in Asia’s gambling center as she struggled for words in the face of questions from media men all over the world.
“I’m really shy and nervous. I just don’t know what to say,” Torres said in Filipino to local reporters after the press con.
For the 21-year old product of the Catalan Fighting System, she’d have an easier time fighting her highly-touted foe than spending time answering questions from strangers inside a grandiose hotel in the middle of an island known for its notoriety for luxury.
“I think I’ll be able to fair better on fight night than here. I think that’s easier,” Torres said with a shy smile.
While Torres figuring out how to combat stage fright, Ishige has been the totally opposite.
The 28 year old Thai known as ‘Tiny Doll’ dazzled in her dress that was draped in feather boa, as she stood out – literally – on her two inch heels while gamely answering questions from the press.
But more so than the pretty face that has turned her into a viral internet superstar in a few days, the Tiger Muay Thai and MMA product is also used to handling her opponents with her fists - evident when she won both of her fights within the first round.
“I have gotten used to the attention, the media, the people who come to interview me but the lifestyle has been the same,” said Ishige.
“I continue to train the same. I just keep on training, just continuing to do the things that I love,” she said.
Despite being overwhelmed by the big lights, Torres won’t be reluctant when the cage doors close on Saturday at the Cotai Arena as she looks to let her fists do the talking for her.
It’s not everyday she gets the chance to represent the country while taking on a fighter that’s already garnering attention in the organization.
“I think I can take her. I’ll do everything cause I know I’m fighting for the Philippines,” said Torres.
“I’m just thankful for the opportunity to be here and even if it’s just my first time, I’ll do everything to win.
