THE Asian Beach Games officially kicks off in Danang, Vietnam on Saturday but the Philippines is already assured of two bronze medals in muay.

Philip Delarmino and Jonathan Polosan got an outright medal in the bantamweight and light welterweight divisions, respectively, on Thursday after winning via default when Uzbekistan’s Diyorbek Turumov and Islam Asenbaev didn’t show up in the weigh-in held days ago.

Delarmino takes on either a Korean or Kazakhstan foe, while Polosan will face either a fighter from Korea or Thailand for a berth in the gold medal match.

With action in muay already underway before the formal start of the Games, Delarmino hurdled his first match against Resul Arashov of Turkmenistan, while Polosan drew a first-round bye.

Jamal Mandani and Arlyn Ranes though, failed to make it in the next round.

Action continues on Friday in marathon swimming where Southeast Asian Games triathlon gold medalist Ma. Claire Adorna and Dale Evangelista compete in the women’s 10km and men’s 5km. events, respectively.

Evangelista is confident about the chances of the team, with Olympian Jessie Khing Lacuna also competing in the 10km swim on Sunday.

“Nakapag-open water naman sila. Si Jessie won sa Caramoan recently tapos si Claire, alam naman natin na playground niya ‘yung dagat,” Evangelista said.
