Moment of 'The Truth' as Vera fights his idol

    Aug 3, 2012
Brandon Vera considers Mauricio “Shogun” Rua one of his heroes in the sport.

FILIPINO-American Brandon “The Truth” Vera faces Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at the Octagon® for a light-heavyweight fight on Saturday (Sunday, Manila time) in Los Angeles.

The 34 year-old Vera, with a record of 12-5-0, is thrilled to be facing a fighter he considers as one of his heroes.

“I have always wanted to fight him,” said Vera, born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia to Filipino father Ernesto and Italian-American mother Amelia.

Vera's respect for the 30 year-old Brazilian fighter is understandable, given Rua's impressive 20-6-0 record. Both weigh 205 lbs. and are almost of the same height as Vera stands 6-foot-2 and Rua 6-foot-1.

Vera has to rely on his excellent grappling and kicking skills to match against Rua's aggressive Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu background.

Now based in San Diego, California, Vera has been proud of his Filipino heritage and visited the country several times in the past. He has become an inspiration to several local mixed martial arts fighters who dream of making it big in the future.

Proline Sports Center hopes to help bring this dream to fruition by bringing in authentic UFC® products into the country. The Official UFC® Fight Gloves, the only glove approved to be worn by UFC® fighters in the Octagon®, are now available at Proline Sports Center stores.
