MARTIN Nguyen sillenced a jampacked Manila crowd as he scored a massive upset over Filipino MMA hero Eduard Folayang with a knockout victory to win the One lightweight title on Friday in One: Legends of the World at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Nguyen became the first fighter to win two belts in multiple divisions as he also claimed the Featherweight title last August.
The Australian landed a huge counter right hand off a Folayang spinning back fist which immediately turned the lights out for the favored fighter out of Team Lakay.
"This is a special place for me. Last year, I came in and won fight of the night, right now it's possibly the knockout of the night," said Nguyen.
"I think coming into the fight, my main objective was a TKO or as a submission. Eduard, I still love you like a brother, I hope you're fine and I hope you come back stronger. I'm still your number one fan," he added.
It was a slow start early on with both fighters feeling each other out in the first round.
Folayang looked to have a razor thin advantage as he landed short kicks while consistently looking for that thunderous head strike.
The Filipino champion tried to up the ante in the second round by being more aggressive but Nguyen was undeterred.
Using Folayang's aggressiveness against him, Nguyen timed the erstwhile champ's spinning backfist attempt with a thunderous right hand to put what was an electric night to a silent end.
It was an unfortunate night for Team Lakay which went off to a good start with wins from Joshua Pacio, Gina Iniong and Kevin Belingon.
Unfortunately, their two top dogs in the card lost with Danny Kingad earlier losing via submission to One flyweight champion Adriano Moraes.
