LAKAY ringmaster Mark Sangiao admits his fighters have been a little bit relaxed after a stellar 2016, but he is confident they will bounce back from that slump.
Team Lakay wasted chances to end the year on a bright note, with Gina Iniong falling in the title eliminator against Mei Yamaguchi in Singapore and April Osenio’s bowing in the return fight against Xiong Jing Nan in Bangkok on Saturday.
Before that Eduard Folayang lost his One lightweight title to Martin Nguyen and Danny Kingad failed in his bid to secure the flyweight title from Adriano Moraes in Manila in November.
“Balik ulit sa dati, tapos kailangan talaga pagaralan yung mga kulang. Individual assessment na kung ano yung dapat i-work ng bawat isa sa kanila,” said Sangiao after Osenio’s loss last Saturday at the Impact Arena in Bankok.
“Tingin ko medyo lahat nagrelax ata ngayon. Kaya di maikakaila na ganun yung resulta. Kailangan mag focus pa on training and sa kailangan idevelop na skills,” he added.
Sangiao is confident of a better 2018 considering that most of his fighters’ academic obligations are now over.
Recently, Osenio got her degree in the University of Cordilleras and now Sangiao is hopeful that his students are now 100 percent focused on preparations.
“Kailangan mag-focus ng husto tapos work pa sa mga kailangan i-develop na skills nila. Then siguro, sa mga iba kasi, like hindi naman sa rason, kung naghahanap lang ng rason, siguro nakatapos naman na sila ngayon kaya makakapagfocus na sila sa mga career,” he added.
Osenio suffered her second straight defeat after a promising start to her career.
Osenio bravely fought Xiong in her division with the Chinese fighter coming in a kilogram over the strawweight limit.
The soft-spoken mentor believes that Osenio had the perfect tools and a solid gameplan to overcome the bigger Chinese but struggled with execution.
“Kung tumagal pa yun maganda sana kasi inaantay namin hanggang pumunta sa ground. Tina-try ni April na i-take down pero nakikita mo na malakas talaga kasi mabigat pa. Aside from mabigat, overweight pa ng one kilo. So isang factor siguro yun kaya di natin na-execute yung game plan. Medyo na-rattle si April nung di siya napunta sa isang option which is dalhin sa ground yung laban,” he said.
Sangiao is also pushing Osenio to return to atomweight.
“Hindi lang natin na-exexcute yung gusto. Siguro tingin ko, pupunta talaga si April sa tamang weight niya sa susunod which is 52 kilograms.”
