AFTER a splendid performance in One: Legends of the World, Gina Iniong’s road to a title shot might be fast tracked.
Iniong handily took care of Priscilla Gaol in the undercard of the final One event in Manila, stopping her foe via vicious strikes through ground and pound to get the TKO victory in the second round to notch her third straight win and improve her career mark to 6-2.
With Atomweight champion Angela Lee sidelined after a vehicular accident in Singapore, One chairman Chatri Sityodtong is now considering Iniong to take the place of Lee against Mei Yamaguchi in One: Immortal Pursuit on November 24 in Singapore.
“That’s literally what Matt Hume said to me, and I said let’s do it. Gina has been offered to fight Mei on two weeks notice, let’s see if Gina accepts, but that is a massive fight for Gina, right?” said Sityodtong on Friday.
“Let’s see if Mei accepts, that’s a massive massive fight, because of Gina wins, then we’re talking a title shot against Angela Lee,” he added.
The 5-foot-2 Filipina slugger had conquered Yamaguchi once in a different MMA outfit, taking a split decision victory in PXC 43 in 2014.
“Opo, tatanggapin ko kasi nag-train naman po ako, tapos ensayado pa naman po ako.”
It’s still yet to be decided whether that fight will warrant an interim belt considering that Lee is expected to be out for pretty long, and Yamaguchi has earned her right to fight for the belt.
But even if it isn’t, it’s still a huge step up for Iniong as a win against the Japanese veteran would catapult her into number one contender status.
