IT’S hard enough to prepare for a fight against a little-known fighter with no video or scouting report. Training for a fight against an unnamed fighter, that’s another story.
But for Eduard Folayang, there are generally just three types of opponents — top-rated striker, superb ground fighter and both — and he is prepared for whatever officials throw at him for One Fighting Championship: Pride of a Nation on August 31 at the Araneta Coliseum.
One FC has yet to name an opponent for the 27-year-old Folayang, who is fighting his third bout in the young mixed martial arts (MMA) outfit, and the fight card is yet to be completed, although officials have made assurances the blanks will be filled soon.
“Kung mapupunta sa ground, laban sa ground… kung standing, mas maganda, pwede nang matapos doon,” said Folayang, who has successfully used his skills and experience as champion wushu artist in penetrating the world of MMA and now holds an 11-2 win-loss record.
The Asian Games wushu silver medalist and Southeast Asian Games champion even said he is prepared to face anyone, stopping just short of declaring himself ready even if his opponent is named right on fight night.
“Right now 80 percent na ako. I’ll be 100 percent on fight night,” said Folayang.
One FC: Pride of a Nation features no championship bout, but officials assured action will be intense.
Brazil’s Bibiano Fernandes, who previously fought and held the bantamweight title in the Dream outfit and had been in talks with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, takes on Brazilian-born Australian Gustavo Falciroli, champion of Australia’s Cage Fighting Championship.
Shinya Aoki of Japan, champion of defunct MMA outfit Dream, makes his One FC debut against a still to be named fighter.
Folayang fought in One FC’s maiden event in September last year, winning a unanimous decision over A Sol Kwon of Korea. But he is coming off a controversial loss to 34-year-old Fil-Danish fighter Ole Laursen in One FC 3 – War of the Lions which drew jeers from the crowd at Singapore Indoor Stadium last March.
