EDUARD Folayang remains hungry for more accolades even after a first successful defense of his ONE lightweight title last April in Manila.
Folayang said he is still determined to continue his success in the cage, weeks after a successful defense of his ONE title against Ev Ting in front of home fans at the Mall of Asia Arena.
In a media day organized for Team Lakay at the Vikings Mall of Asia on Tuesday, Folayang said he is awaiting an announcement on who his next opponent is, but that won’t stop him from looking to improve even after the victory over Ting.
“’Yung susunod, wala pang final announcement or any information sa ONE Championship. The best thing I can do is to continue the things and reviewing kung ano ‘yung pagkukulang ko on my last fight, kung ano pang improvements.
“I think the best thing to do is to continue to grow in this sport,” said Folayang, who wrested the ONE crown from Shinya Aoki last year.
Folayang made a swashbuckling performance last month as he won a unanimous decision over Ting to retain the ONE title. But the Baguio native said he has learned not to be satisfied by just one victory against Ting, comparing an opponent to food.
“If you are a champion, every contender is really hungry to come to you. Wag mong tignan ang sarili mo na pagkain. Tignan mo rin sarili mo na gutom ka din kapag tinitignan mo ‘yung kalaban mo. It really needs a lot of preparation. Don’t settle kasi tinalo mo ‘yung nandiyan, maging champion ka, tapos na. Hindi. There are more things you need to prove not only on your own but to those whom I’m influencing.”
That hunger was on display against Ting, Folayang said, as he was asked what food the Malaysia-Kiwi fighter was during the fight.
“Sayote,” said Folayang, drawing laughs from reporters.
Folayang was joined during the media availability by members of Team Lakay that includes Geje Eustaquio, who will fight against Anatpong Bunrad of Thailand in ONE: Dynasty of Heroes on May 26 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
