EDUARD Folayang is looking to get some sort of payback against either of the two possible opponents in his first title defense of his ONE Championship lightweight belt set this April in Manila.
Following his ONE lightweight title victory last December, Folayang is scheduled to see action in three months time for his first defense on home soil possibly against either Kamal Shalorus of Iran or Ev Ting of Malaysia.
Shalorus and Ting will fight it out on February 10 in ONE: Throne of Tigers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where a title shot could be at stake against Folayang.
“Hinihintay ko ‘yung mananalo this February 10,” said Folayang in an interview with SPIN.ph right after a photo shoot with FHM on Friday at the Summit Media offices in Mandaluyong City.
Incidentally, Folayang’s two looming opponents are familiar to him, especially the former UFC and World Extreme Cagefighting fighter Shalorus who beat the newly-crowned Filipino champion last May 2013 via unanimous decision.
Meanwhile, Ting has beaten Filipino fighters like the Kelly brothers Eric and Edward, and Folayang's teammate at Team Lakay, Honorio Banario.
“Siya (Kamal) ang tumalo sa akin nung 2013. Talking about experience, naglaro siya sa WEC at UFC dati. Si Ev Ting naman, halos marami rin siyang Pinoy na tinalo,” said Folayang.
While he waits for his opponent, Folayang said he is keeping himself in shape before he goes into the specifics in his preparation for the title defense.
“’Yung training ko, more on physical aspect muna. Kapag nalaman na kung sino ang kalaban ko, dun na ako mag-strategize,” shared Folayang, who is excited to defend the belt in front of the home crowd.
“After how many years na hindi rin ako naglaro sa Pilipinas, halos lahat ng three international fights ko last year, international. Nandoon ‘yung pressure pero nagrerepresent ako sa mga kababayan ko nung nakuha ko ‘yung belt. Malaking karangalan sa akin,” he added.
