ONE Interim Atomweight MMA World Champion Denice "The Menace" Zamboanga is fully embracing her role as the face for women's martial arts in the country.

Zamboanga made history by becoming the first Filipina to win a World Championship in the all-encompassing combat sport of mixed martial arts when she beat Alyonna Rassohyna earlier this year for the interim title.

The 28-year-old's victory put the spotlight on women in mixed martial arts. She now hopes to lead this revolution, knowing many female fighters could follow in her footsteps.

Speaking to the Atleta Filipina podcast, Zamboanga shared her hopes of inspiring Filipinas around the country.

"Actually, I think it will [make a difference]. I'm the first Filipina to become an MMA world champion in our country," Zamboanga said.

"I want to serve as an inspiration for our fellow Filipinas to train in mixed martial arts."

As she breaks into sporting mainstream relevance, Zamboanga hopes her success eliminates the stereotype that it's dangerous for women to compete in the sport.

"I think you really have to let go of the thought that this sport is not for women. Don't think that this is dangerous. Do what you do in training," Zamboanga said.

"If you think of all the negative things in this sport, that's what will change your mindset. You have to think about the positives that it could bring you. Nothing is impossible."

Now, Zamboanga looks to continue breaking barriers for all Filipina fighters — and aspiring ones — when she faces Stamp Fairtex for the unification of the ONE Atomweight MMA World Title at ONE 173: Denver this August 3 at Ball Arena in Colorado.

Zamboanga is confident this is another stage for her to inspire and keep the fire burning for women's MMA in the country.

"I know God will prepare me for this fight," Zamboanga said.

"And I know He will give me this victory to inspire women, young girls, female athletes, and fellow fighters to never give up on their dreams."
