BRANDON Vera will defend his ONE Championship heavyweight title against an opponent still to be determined on December 2.
ONE Championship vice-president and former MMA fighter Rich Franklin announced Vera’s title defense on Tuesday during an open workout held at the Mall of Asia Music Hall.
“I just found out today that I’m going to fight,” said Vera when interviewed by reporters. “There was a rumor that I’ll be fighting in December. I said ‘Okay, let me know.’”
“Rich said it today so okay na,” the Filipino-American added.
The title defense will come almost a year after the former UFC fighter claimed the ONE heavyweight title by beating Paul Cheng in the ONE Championship: Spirit of Champions held at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Vera said he has been staying in shape after making the decision to stay in the Philippines for good in preparation for the possible title defense.
“I’ve been training already since I’ve been here. I don’t know when I was going to fight but I’ve been training already,” said Vera.
“I’m excited to train even more. Hindi na ako matutulog kasi may title defense na. Totoo na,” said Vera.
Vera plans to continue his training in the Philippines and bring in his coaches for the title defense.
