    Brandon Vera denied a second world title after TKO loss to Aung La

    BRANDON Vera failed in his quest to become a ONE two-division champion, losing to light heavyweight title-holder Aung La N Sang via technical knockout in the main event of ONE: Century on Sunday at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan.

    The reigning heavyweight champion was rocked by a killer spinning right elbow that left him helpless while the Burmese titlist pummeling him to the ground before the referee stopped the match at the 3:24 mark of round two.

    It wasn't a good night for Filipino fighters as Shinya Aoki needed only 54 seconds to dispatch Honorio Banario while Bibiano Fernandes scored a resounding second-round submission win over Kevin Belingon.

    Aoki, a former ONE Lightweight World Champion, sent an emphatic statement that he's still one of the best in the promotion's division, submitting the Team Lakay bet in less than a minute with a D'arce choke.

    An entertaining duel between two proud champions took a crucial turn when a crushing elbow by Aung La left Vera groggy and defenseless to a barrage of punches.

    Vera, the reigning ONE Heavyweight World Champion, dropped to 16-8 as he saw the end of his four-match win streak in what is his first loss in the promotion, while Aung La won his fourth straight match to rise to a 16-10 record.


    Aoki hardly broke a sweat in this match, which was his first since losing the title to Christian Lee back in May. Yet he made sure he'll get another victim in the form of Banario as he remained unbeaten in front of his home fans.

    This win improved the Japanese king's record to 44-9, while sending Banario to a 14-10 record.

    Brazilian champion Fernandes made sure that there were no questions this time out, tapping out his Team Lakay foe at the 2:16 mark of the second round to keep his throne.
