IT didn’t take long for the Philippines to score gold medals in the 4th Asian Beach Games as it tabbed two on Thursday in Phuket, Thailand.
Maybel Masuda won the Philippines’ first-ever gold medal in the Asian Beach Games after beating Dao Le Thu Trang of Vietnam, 15-0, in the women’s 50kg event in ju-jitsu a day before the formal opening of the fourth edition of the biennial event.
Annie Ramirez beat Onanong Saengsirichok of Thailand, 99-0, in the women’s -60kg ju-jitsu event to also win a gold medal.
Long-time judoka John Baylon won the first medal for the Philippines on Thursday, when he won the bronze medal in the men’s ju-jitsu 80kg class by beating Suntra Sooknatee of Thailand.
The opening ceremony of the 4th Asian Beach Games was held on Friday but several events have already started including ju-jitsu and flag football.
Filipino athletes from wushu, wrestling, basketball, squash, and flag football will also see action in the Games.
