ARNEL Mandal beat world champion Vu Minh Duc of Vietnam in the Wushu Sanda World Cup held recently in Hangzhou, China.
The 22-year-old Mandal ruled the -52 kg category in beating Vu, who won the world championship tilt last year at the expense of the Filipino fighter from Iloilo City.
Francisco Solis, meanwhile, took the silver medal after a loss to Li Kang of China in the finals of the -56 kilogram category.
Divine Wally captured the bronze medal in the women’s -48 kilogram category after a loss to Dai Shimeng of China in the semifinals in the Philippine campaign supported by the Philippine Sports Commission.
Wushu Federation Philippines president Tan She Ling commended Mandal, Solis and Wally for their feats and expressed confidence that the trio will win gold medals in next year’s Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines.
