Drive light, easy, and free with this guide on what shoes to wear for daily driving

You don't have to buy racing shoes for daily driving.

WHAT kind of racing shoes you should wear to the track is for a different topic altogether. What we're here to discuss is what type of footwear you should be wearing for daily driving.

When you're behind the wheel, your shoes should allow you to drive without restriction or discomfort. A key tip is to drive with thin-soled shoes.

How thin should your shoe's sole be?

The Canadian Safety Council recommends soles no thicker than 25mm. Others are even more conservative, saying that you shouldn't go over 10mm. Short of pulling out a ruler on every pair of shoes you own, the important thing is that your soles are thin enough for you to feel the pedals and how much pressure you're applying to them.

Your shoes should also be light enough for you to effectively maneuver your feet, and grippy enough to cling to the pedals' surfaces.

Other kinds of footwear like high heels, wedges, flip-flops, and sandals are a big no-no. Uneven soles and unsecured flaps can get caught on the floor mat, restricting your movement and increasing the likelihood of an accident.

If you happen to be out in heels and flip-flops, you're better off driving barefoot. That way you avoid getting anything caught while moving your feet.

In places like Australia where wearing flip-flops is common, driving sans shoes is an unspoken SOP. Still, the Canadian Safety Council advises against it, citing lack of grip and the possibility of insufficient pedal pressure.
