Tips on How to Avoid the Rainy Day Blues

    Nov 30, 2014

THERE are two seasons in the Philippines- dry and wet. And oh boy, it can get very wet indeed, particularly from June to November.

Whether we find ourselves at work, at school or at play in the face of a deluge, it pays to take some precautions to stay healthy. Here are some useful tips:

    1.     Always have rain gear handy

Aside from the uncomfortable feeling of wearing wet clothes and shoes, getting drenched by a sudden downpour can lead to many unpleasant things such as colds and fever. Make sure you have something to protect you from getting wet before you leave the house or office. An umbrella or a rain jacket are your best options to keep you dry and warm.

    2.     Take precautions against mosquitoes

Hospitals report an increase in Dengue cases during the rainy season. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water so make sure to keep your surroundings clean- dispose anything that might collect rainwater and unclog waterways as well as drainages.

    3.    Wash your hands

Don’t wait until its mealtime to wash those hands. Keep flu, colds and cough at bay by making sure you wash your hands thoroughly in order so disease won’t spread. Make sure the soap reaches everything- between the fingers, underneath the nails, the wrists and the top and bottom of the hands.

    4.     Only drink clean water

Water-borne diseases such as amoebiasis and cholera are prevalent during the rainy season. If you think your water supply might be contaminated, drink bottled or purified water.

    5.     Avoid wading in floods

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease that can be found in the urine of contaminated animals, particularly rats. Walking in contaminated flood water poses a great risk since the disease can be transmitted via cuts, abrasions and the mucous membranes in the eyes, nose and mouth.

We also suggest that you take a multivitamin. And make sure it’s a multivitamin that helps strengthen the immune system.
