ONE of the tallest buildings in the Philippines will host a most unique race as the Shangri-La at the Fort will be the official venue for the Kerry Sports Manila Vertical Run 2016 on August 14.
Part of the 2016 World Vertical Circuit, this international stair climbing race will take place in Manila for the first time, after staging races in cities such as London, Dubai, New York, Paris, Sydney, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.
In the Manila race, runners will start at the hotel’s lobby and ascend 59 floors to the penthouse level. They will face the challenge of running up over 1,300 steps to a height of 250 meters.
The run offers four categories. Runners who are at least 18 years old can choose to go solo and run up all 59 floors with a registration fee of P1,500. The Fun Climb category, on the other hand, is ideal for beginners where they will take on only 20 floors. This group allows runners who are at least 12 years old and registration is at P1,200.
Meanwhile, there's also a Team Challenge category that could serve as a team-building activities for companies, teammates and friends. Each team should consist of four runners, with each runner climbing all 59 floors. The winning team will be calculated by the 3rd runner that crosses the line. Registration cost is P6,000 for the team.
Finally, there's the Elite category that's by invitation only to select professional runners racing to climb all 59 floors.
The Vertical World Circuit, governed by the International Skyrunning Federation, employs a point system where runners that participate in the race will gain points based on their ranking. The points will be collated from each leg that the runner participates in to determine their overall ranking. The runner with the highest number of points at the end of the nine legs will be crowned the Vertical World Circuit World Champion.
“We are thrilled to be bringing the Vertical World Circuit to the Philippines for the first time and having the world’s best stair climbers participating at the inaugural Kerry Sports Manila Vertical Run,” said John Rice, General Manager of Shangri-La at the Fort, Manila. “We look forward to hosting them and the hundreds of participants who will sign up for the challenge.”
Stair climbing, first known as 'vertical races' in the 1970s, is now a global sport with stair climbing clubs hailing from the US, Canada, Europe and Asia, as well as professional athletes who train year-round to be the first to reach the top of the world’s tallest buildings.
Although still a relatively new sport, stair climbing has quickly caught on with fitness enthusiasts attracted not only with its physical demands but by also the novelty of competing in unique urban settings.
