THE Apocalypse Run certainly lived up to its billing.

An estimated 3,300 runners at the Circuit Makati took part in the five-kilometer obstacle run meant to encourage first-time runners to take up an active lifestyle while having fun at the same time.

The fun run was advertised as an 'all-in-one' event that supposedly combined a 'water splash run,' 'obstacle run' and 'color run' followed by an open-air night party with a live band and free drinks.

The P650 registration fee was inclusive of a race bib, singlet, admittance to a 'Power Party' and a loot bag containing freebies and giveaways from sponsors.

“We inserted a fun aspect so (beginner runners) won’t be intimidated," said Rommel Rico of Great Events Plus Phil. Inc., the event organizer.

Held inside the former Sta. Ana race track, the property is currently under construction by real estate developer Ayala Land as a sports park complex with residential and commercial establishments.

In the actual race that started several minutes past the 5pm gunstart, the 'water splash' was provided courtesy of a fire truck spraying a mist above the runners’ heads; the 'color' consisted of powder strewn on plastic sheets laid underneath a makeshift ‘spider maze’ where runners were supposed to crawl.

In the 'obstacle' portion, actors in zombie make-up were supposed to chase runners on an unpaved portion of the course but due to the obvious dangers involved many runners just chose to have photos taken with them instead.

Many participants felt shortchanged with the event and expressed their disappointment on social media a few hours later over the arduous registration process, the failure to supply them with singlets, and the choice of the venue.

“I’ve been joining fun runs and races for three years now and I must say this is the worst. The event was horrible. We ran without our singlet, hydration was bad. It wasn't even cold water. A very, very unorganized event. Marshals don't even know what they were doing. It wasn’t even a 5k run!” said Facebook user Kikkz you on the event’s home page.

Another runner, Daniel Gimenez, who had to wait three hours at a redemption center to get his singlet but was told that it ran out, added “The race wasn't even 5K and you had us run through a dangerous construction site where people could have gotten seriously injured.”

As for the promised freebies, J.D. Apolo, said “Pocari Sweat at Tanduay Ice?! Seryoso, pinopromote niyo health consciousness tapos alak?”

Liz Bernadette Tan probably summed up the collective frustration by her two word remark: "Very disappointing."
