“IT’s more fun outside!”
The recent R.O.X. Outdoor Festival 2016 gave fitness enthusiasts several good reasons to embrace summer and practically every season on the calendar.
Held last April 16 and 17 at Bonifactio High Street, the festival gave serious athletes, weekend warriors and outdoor enthusiasts more reasons to celebrate the summer season.
Pop-up tents displayed gear and apparel from international outdoor and apparel brands that include The North Face, Salomon, Fox, Columbia, Mountain Hardwear, Sea to Summit and others.
Duathlon, mountain biking and running competitions were also held in the BGC grounds for participants, the winners receiving prizes from sponsors.
Mary Ann Oriondo, R.O.X. communications manager, said the weekend event was an invitation for everyone to try the great outdoors and let them know what it has to offer via outdoor-related activities.
Aside from the brands, R.O.X. also assembled advocacy groups, operators and organizations to promote climbing, trail running, biking, camping, swimming and surfing.
“Our real targets are the beginners — we want to tap the families, friends and barkadas. For them to spend one weeked of the summer out of town. Yung mga hard core nandyan na yan e and they will be part of the events. It’s a way of giving back,” Oriondo said.
The festival provided the glimpse of what the outdoors are and what to do when you’re there. Filipinos, Oriondo observed, have changed their attitudes when it comes to the outdoors.
“Noon sobrang kaunti. Niche ang market. Now sobrang growing outdoors. People are now looking to be involved.”
A large influence has been social media and the fact that the Philippines has many locales waiting to be explored.
Depending on merchandise, R.O.X. has divided its “outdoor department store: in different categories: camping/hiking, travel/adventure, and active/sports.
“In a year iba-iba ang trend. It depends on the season,” explained Oriondo. "For the cooler months of December to January it’s the hiking/trekking/ climbing season. For summer, it’s really adventure and travel sa beaches or anything na may water. Bike is one of the fastest growing sports. So iba-iba talaga depending on the season.”
