    MILO, DepEd team up for fitness program that will teach school kids 'Champ Moves'

    STARTING this month, six million kids will start their day with a sports-inspired dance routine and learning the 'breakfast of champions.'

    Nestle Philippines and the Department of Education on Thursday launched ‘MILO Champ Moves,’ a nationwide school-based program that aims to encourage elementary-level kids in 10,000 schools to live an active and healthy lifestyle.

    Designed by fitness experts, the program seeks to foster the importance of physical activities and good nutrition among children 7-12 years old and will run from July until the end of the year.

    Sherilla Bayona, Nestle Philippines business executive manager, said Champ Moves “is part of the program we launched last year with the Department of Education, ‘One Child, One Sport’, a school-based program which encourages Filipino children to be active in the morning before the flag ceremony."

    Apart from the three-minute exercise emulating sports movements that will be performed every morning, Champ Moves will also equip teachers with nutrition modules that highlight the importance of a healthy breakfast to help fuel children’s performance in school and in doing physical activities.

    DepEd Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali said the initiative would encurage students to stay fit, citing that only 50-60 minutes a week are allocated for physical education classes.

    “We may not be giving enough time for our children … by this partnership we are very thankful (to MILO) for partnering with DepEd with these very creative and innovative programs."

    Bayona is optimistic about the results. “We have talked to a number of principals and they have noticed a change in the kids’ behavior throughout the day — they’re more alert and even in academics they perform well.”

    UAAP MVP Kiefer Ravena of the Ateneo Blue Eagles helped demonstrate the dance moves and was later surrounded by grade schoolers for selfies and autographs.  

    “It’s a very good campaign. It’s really engaging the youth to have a healthier lifestyle,” he told Spin.ph.

    “It’s important that we are really educated and it’s important that hindi lang tayo sumusunod dahil uso siya but that we know what we are doing, especially for youth athletes, made-develop 'yung discipline sa pagkain ng tama and the proper nutrition. Sa athletes puhunan talaga ang katawan.”

    MILO sports executive Andrew Neri said they targeted big populations of school children and will begin in Metro Manila and parts of Luzon before bringing the program to Visayas and Mindanao.      

    Nestle Philippines chairman and CEO Suresh Narayanan said the program “focuses on getting the children, relatively young, to start practicing, in an engaging manner, activities that will improve their overall health and wellness.”
