Meeting the parents? Follow these style and grooming hacks to make a good impression

    Mar 5, 2018
Here's all you need to make a good first impression when meeting your girlfriend's parents

MEETING your girl’s folks is a sign of a healthy relationship.

It might be nerve-racking but it’s actually a big step in your relationship, so man up!

Think of it as meeting her barkada for the first time but with less “HAHAHAs” and a lot of “PO” and “OPO's" instead.

You never go to war without surveying the battlefield. You have to ask and do some research.

WHO. Ask your girl who’ll be there? Just the folks? The whole family including the siblings, cousins, and even their pet dog?

WHEN. Because duh, you’d have to block this schedule, or you know, you might want to catch a cold on that day, too.

WHAT. Ask details about each member. But maybe not too much because this might lead to her saying, “Eh diba nakwento ko na sayo ‘to? ‘Di ka kasi nakikinig.” Ask about what her mom likes to do and her dad’s favorite sport. Golf? Better bank knowledge about pars and Pro V1s. Basketball? You better know if he’s team LeBron or team Curry. But more importantly ask what to avoid talking about—you don’t want to bring up sensitive issues by accident, right?

WHERE. Will it be in a fancy restaurant? In a third wave coffee shop from Japan where its logo is nowhere close to its name? Or just in her house?

Now that we know what we’re up against, it’s time to sketch the game plan.

GIFT. You better not go empty-handed. Our mothers always told us (Yes, we take mom’s advice to heart) to “Never go to anyone’s house without a gift.” Flowers in a vase for her mom? A nice bottle of white wine or Japanese whiskey for dad? Or even as simple as cake for dessert!

ACT. Be ready with a firm hand shake, make sure to call them “tito” and “tita,” offer to split the bill, and being extra generous with the words “please” and “thank you” is a must. Confidence and being genuine is what truly matters.

WHAT TO WEAR. Nothing beats a classic white button down shirt. But here are more options if you feel like experimenting.

    For a safe look

Classic Lacoste polo shirt tucked in, paired with crisp uniqlo chinos and Harlan white sneakers.

    For a more relaxed look

Comme Des Garcons Play striped shirt, with a classic black slim fitted 511 Levi’s and a white Converse Jack Purcell

    For a bit more dressy

Zara’s Textured Weave Blazer and Trousers, H&M Premium cotton shirt and Cole Haan burgundy tassel loafers.

Perfume: Diptyque Dos-On solid perfume or Creed Aventus

If followed correctly, and if you succeed, your girl will definitely appreciate it. And she might just give you a reward the same night.
