THE apple doesn't usually fall that far from the tree. But sometimes, it just rolls a little farther than expected.
Parents are usually their kids' first heroes, and it's normal for kids to want to follow in their parents' footsteps. But as they grow older, children find their own stride and set out on their own path. While they will always carry their parents' influence with them, some kids create their own mark in an entirely different field.
This is most evident in athlete families where one, or both, parents practice a sport and have children who are making a name for themselves in a totally different arena.

Former basketball superstar and now Magnolia team manager Alvin Patrimonio is undoubtedly one of the best PBA players of all time. His two daughters, Tin and Clarice, inherited his athletic genes and plays Tennis for National University in the UAAP.
Alvin, a four-time PBA MVP when he played for the Purefoods franchise, couldn’t be any prouder of his two daughters who have won their share of championships as well.
Asia's sprint queen Lydia de Vega-Mercado and daughter Paneng are both stars in their own right.
Lydia, a former Asian Games gold medalist, was considered Asia's fastest woman in the 80s. Her daughter Paneng, was a three-time champion with La Salle in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.
Lydia has been an athletics coach at a secondary school in Singapore for 14 years now. Paneng still plays volleyball with Petro Gazz in the Premier Volleyball League.
Jayvee Gayoso made his mark as a basketball player in the 90s playing for Ginebra. His son Jarvey is making a name for himself playing for Ateneo in the UAAP men’s football tournament.
Eddie Laure was a basketball veteran who has played in the PBA, MBA, and PBL during the late 90s to the 2000s.
His daughters EJ and Eya also started with basketball when they were young but eventually shifted to volleyball. The two are now playing for University of Santo Tomas.
