IT'S a double celebration for MMA fighter Rene Catalan. Not only is he celebrating his 41st birthday, he also just won silver at the 30th Southeast Asian Games.
He's not resting on his laurels, though. This Saturday, Catalan will impart his hard-earned knowledge to conduct a free sports program. His goal? Expand the skills of the Philippine national teams in various sports like kickboxing, sambo, and mixed martial arts.
Having created the “Search for Filipino Hero” project together with the Philippine Encuentro Championship, Catalan wanted to help aspiring athletes hone and enhance their skills, as well as provide an avenue for them to be discovered by the national teams.
“My goal is to bring honor and glory to our country through sports, to elevate our Filipino athletes' MMA skills," he said to SPIN Life. "Ginawa ‘yung platform para matulungan ‘yung mga young athletes and potential athletes, para ma-elevate ‘yung MMA skills nila and makapag-compete as part of the Philippine team, internationally.”
The event will be on Saturday, December 14, 3:00 PM, at the Catalan Fighting System Gym in Yague St., Tejeros, Makati.
During the sports program, the Wushu world champion and his whole camp will personally train the participants. Various self-discipline, self-defense, and health-defense techniques will be taught during the event, as he believes that these are the key to staying tough and hearty.
“At age 41, [it's about] discipline pa rin. It is not about the age, it is about the personal discipline and determination to [reach] your goal,” he said. “Tuturuan namin sila ng iba’t ibang klaseng self-discipline and defense.”
