Real talk with Mela Tunay: Why you should date a volleyball player

Dec 18, 2018

MEN have different preferences when it comes to the women they date. Some go for looks, some for intellect, and some prefer a good sense of humor.

While all of these are certainly valid characteristics to consider, Petron volleyball star Mela Tunay makes a compelling case for why men should include in that list dating strong, athletic women-especially volleyball players, of course.

1. We understand.

Being part of a squad composed of at least 14 individuals, volleyball players know how to listen. Each team member is free to voice out her opinion which everyone must respect even if some may not agree with it. "Ang volleyball players understanding, kasi we prefer less drama," Tumay says.

2. We are open-minded.

Tunay explains that, as athletes, volleyball players deal with different kinds of people, from top management to coaches and teammates to fans. Therefore, she says, they can take jokes and are not easily offended. "Hindi kami sensitive."

3. We know how to adjust.

No matter how much a team prepares, things don't always go as planned during a game. When the coach cannot, for whatever reason, call a timeout to adjust the strategy, the players must learn to think quickly and adjust on the fly. "Like sa game situations, marunong kaming mag-adjust, be it sa pakikisama or sa time sa jowa," says Tunay.

4. We are physically fit.

Athletes normally spend at least two to three hours working out during practice or on their own at the gym. Apart from this, many professional teams have their own conditioning coaches and trainers to help maintain the athletes' health. "Naaalagaan namin ang sarili namin,” Tunay says. “So we are fit… and hot. Char!"

5. We teach you how to be loyal.

Volleyball players may have different playing positions-there are attackers, blockers, setters, and liberos, but all of them know how to spike and they spike hard! Tunay says that having a volleyball player as a girlfriend will keep you on the straight and narrow - or else. "Kapag jowa ka namin, mamo-motivate kang maging loyal, kundi we’ll slap you in the face! Pak!" Tunay says.

Makes sense.
