BACK IN THE early 2000s, Meteor Garden was a hit in the Philippines, and fans of the show witnessed Barbara Hsu's dramatic moments portraying the role of Dong Shan Cai (Shancai).
But now a tragic moment occurred as the lead actress behind the iconic Taiwanese drama show passed away at the age of 48. Her sister Dee Hsu confirmed her death to TVBS, through her agent.
Prior to her death, Hsu traveled to Japan during the Chinese New Year holiday. From there she suffered from pneumonia caused by influenza complications.
"Our whole family came to Japan for a trip, and my dearest and most kindhearted sister Barbie Hsu died of influenza-induced pneumonia and unfortunately left us," as revealed by Dee Hsu through Barbie Hsu's agent.
She added: "I was grateful to be her sister in this life and that we got to care for and spend time with each other. I will always be grateful to her and miss her"
Hsu's performance in Meteor Garden has encapsulated fans especially in scenes where she connects with the other characters especially Daoming Si (Jerry Yan) and Huaze Lei (Vic Chou).
She even got a nomination in the 36th Golden Bell Award for Best Leading Actress for her role.
And while many would remember her as Shancai, Hsu has also made strides as an actress in films such as Connected, Corner with Love, and Million Dollar Crocodile, where she was handed with numerous Best Actress nominations. She managed to secure the Best Actress award in the 4th Macau International Movie Festival for Million Dollar Crocodile.
