IT’S a new UAAP volleyball season and the much-anticipated tournament has a new game announcer, Kassie Gormley.
The third-year communication arts student from the University of Santo Tomas is the new voice of the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament.
Gormley felt both pressure and excitement, replacing the late Rolly Manlapaz, who set such a high standard for commentating.
“Of course may pressure kasi alam natin na si Sir Rolly is legendary, it’s super pressure kasi big shoes to fill,” she shared.
“[But] when I first found out I was super excited, kasi syempre not many will get the chance to do it,” added Gormley.
Although she was only told about the job two days prior to the start of the tournament, she got her rhythm pretty quickly.
What surprised her, though, were the people comparing her voice to the one in the Mobile Legends app.
“Siguro today lang, I was asking the FD’s and the directors na ‘Ka-boses ko ba talaga yung sa Mobile Legends?’” she said.
“I listen to it [Mobile Legends] and I guess ka-boses ko siya kasi we both have a foreigner's voice and that’s my English. I’m American, may slang, the accent is there. But maybe I don’t know, matinis ba?” she asked.
“So going into today I tried to modulate a little bit pero when it’s the game kasi na super intense na and super exciting, sometimes, I don’t really think about it. I’m just doing my job,” she continued.
But despite Gormley's efforts, people on social media had a lot to say. The outspoken commentator, however, did not bother to pay attention to the comments from the bashers.
“Deadma lang, I’m just doing my job,” she said.
Before she debuted as an indoor volleyball game barker, Gormley, 19, already had a stint with beach volleyball.
