FIL-AM libero Alex Bollier will take over the defense of Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors as the Philippine Super Liga All-Filipino Conference kicks on June 15.
It will be a sight to see Bollier, who stands 5'7", bolstering the Lady Realtors' floor defense. Usually, volleyball players as tall as Sta. Lucia's newest recruit play the attacker's role in the Philippines.
“I thought it’s interesting that a lot of players my height are hitters here,” said Bollier. “I think it can be a big advantage because I can get overhead balls. I can cover more space because I’m bigger so I think it’ll be good.”
All eyes will be on the newcomer as she steps into the territory of some of PSL's seasoned liberos like Dawn Macandili (F2 Logistics), Kath Arado (Generika-Ayala), Bang Pineda (UVC), Jeck Dionela (Cignal), Jen Reyes (Foton), Daryl Racraquin (Marinerang Pilipina), Lizlee Ann Pantone (PLDT), and Denden Lazaro (Petron).
As excited she is to play in the PSL, Bollier, who played for California Polytechnic State University, stressed she did her homework before coming to the Philippines.
“I’ve been watching videos of the liberos here and they’re really good," Bollier said. "I’m really impressed with the level of talent and the hustle. It makes me more excited to just hop in there and see what I can do and what I can improve.”
Bollier will join fellow Fil-Americans MJ Philips and Rebecca Rivera at Sta. Lucia.
Growing up in the Orange County, California, Bollier, who’s been in the country for two weeks now, is still adjusting to the hot weather in the Philippines. But her favorite milk tea keeps her feeling refreshed despite the punishing heat.
“I love milk tea so I’m really glad I came," said Bollier, who will turn 23 on June 17. "I always like finding places in California, trying different kinds of milk tea — and here I'm not disappointed. I think it's even better here.”
