PHOENIX may not have as many fans as other ball clubs in the PBA, but for head coach Louie Alas, his wife Liza provides all the support he needs.
Despite her busy schedule as manager of a Makati five-star hotel, Liza makes sure that she's at every game for coach Louie. " I always assure him na I'll be behind him 101 percent," she says." I make it a point na andito ako parati in all his games kasi kailangan ng moral support from me."
Although Liza is a self-confessed "silent cheerer," she feels that this doesn't make her any less a supporter. While other PBA WAGS cheer loudly during games, she would normally pray from the start of the game up until the finish. She shares, “Kanya-kanya naman ang showing of support, yung iba by cheering, ako, I clap but most of the time I pray talaga. Syempre mixed emotions but I hold on sa prayer na kaya!"
Admittedly, it was easier for her to be a supporter when both Louie and their son Kevin were in Letran as coach and player. All she needed to do then was wear the school colors and sit behind the Knights' bench during games.
But now that Kevin is in the PBA suiting up for NLEX and Louie is with Phoenix, it can’t be helped. She has to choose which team to support. “I always assure Kevin na I love him, walang duda doon. But if it’s gonna be his team NLEX up against Phoenix, I have to show my support to Phoenix. Syempre, husband ko yun eh and head-coaching job yan eh,” she tells us. “Siguro noong time na assistant pa siya [Louie], I was rooting for my son, but now it’s a different ball game, so naintindihan naman ni Kevin.”
As Liza puts it: "Phoenix talaga ako. In fact, yung wallpaper ko [sa telepono], Phoenix. Kasi kapag hindi mo mahal ang team, mahirap mag-support talaga."
Liza is clear about this, though: if her son's team, NLEX, is up against a team other than her husband's team, Phoenix, she is NLEX all the way.
