WIN or lose, United VC team captain Kalei Mau has always given her best.
In their previous match against Sta. Lucia in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix, Mau unloaded six consecutive, powerful attacks down the stretch to bail her team out and win the match.
The Fil-Hawaiian spiker shared that her attitude on the court was inspired by her sports heroes, football great Pelé and Mia Hamm.
“I was No. 10 at one time because when I was 10 years old that was my favorite year to be alive. It was like my life was so perfect when I was 10 and I always remember that,” Mau told SPIN Life.
“I’m actually a soccer player, I've played football all my life, and my favorite inspirational soccer player was Pelé and he is No. 10 and so is Mia Hamm,” she added.
Pelé, a retired Brazilian professional football player, is regarded as the greatest player of all time, while Hamm is a retired American professional soccer player and a two-time Olympic gold medalist.
Hoping to wear the same jersey as Pelé and Mann, Mau would want to use the No. 10 in her first professional league. However, it wasn’t available.
“The first pro league that I went to in Puerto Rico they didn’t have [the number] 10 so I was [number] one and I stuck with it,” shared Mau, who still wears the jersey No. 1 today.
Mau, who still has the highest respect for her idols, has learned to love the No. 1.
“Because zero is invisible,” she said. “I’m gonna stay one though because I’m number one on the court and number one in your heart.”
