Jersey Story: Newsome and No. 11 always seem to find way back to each other

WHILE most players have a special reason for their jersey numbers, Meralco guard Chris Newsome opted to have the No. 11 only because he was forced to.

Although he has grown to love it, the former Ateneo standout revealed that the playing uniform was just given to him because there was no other available jersey.

“Yeah it’s kid of like that, when I joined little leagues they just assigned it to me and I was just ok, cool,” he said.

“Actually I don’t know, I have no special reason. It’s just something that I always had, it’s the first jersey that I had and I just kind of liked it and stuck with it and kind of owned it,” he added.

Newsome stared wearing the No. 11 back in middle school at Rio Rancho Mid High in New Mexico, USA.

As if the world conspired with him, he would always have the No. 11 when he entered high school in Rio Rancho High School, when he moved to the Philippines and played for Ateneo in the UAAP and when he turned pro and played for Meralco in the PBA.

“Just the fact that I was able to get it in every level I’m in [is amazing],” he said.

“In Ateneo, of course coming in as a new guy and someone already has No. 11 then you can’t have it, [but somehow I did],” he added. “Same thing here in Meralco, I think it was Mike Cortez and once I got drafted Mike was out at the same time.”

“So it was kind of perfect timing. So we kind of find our way to each other,” he continued.
