VOLLEYBALL star Aby Maraño is among those players whose jersey numbers represent significant dates in their lives.
Maraño wore the No. 2. when she played for Don Antonio de Zuzuarregui Sr. Memorial Academy in high school.
When SPIN Life caught up with the F2 Logistics star during one of their games in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix at The Arena in San Juan, she giddily shared the reason behind her playing uniform.
“Kasi noong high school syempre may mga jowa jowa ka, may pa-monthsary,” recalled Maraño that drew laughter from a handful of sportswriters.
“Totoo yun, di ako nagjo-joke,” she said. “‘Yung aking first love daw, ganyan.”
When the reporters kidded that her boyfriend Robert Bolick might get mad with her revelation, Maraño said that the NorthPort rookie already knew about it.
“Alam na ni Roberta yun, wag siyang umarte-arte diyan kaya ako nag-No. 2,” she said.
After the relationship with her first love was over, Maraño wanted to change her jersey number. But senior players in her team told her not to.
“Tapos gusto ko na magpalit ng number kasi naghiwalay na kami,” she said laughing.
“[Pero] sabi noong senior player ko, 'wag kang magpapalit nang magpapalit ng jersey number kasi hindi ka makikilala ng tao kasi paiba-iba ka ng number.’ So ayun, nag-stick na ako sa No. 2,” she added.
After wearing No. 2 in high school, she learned to love the playing uniform.
“Tapos pagdating ng college, ganoon din gusto ko na rin yung No. 2. Tapos sinabi ni ate Kaye Martinez, siya yung sinundan ko, ‘alagaan mo yang number na yan’” she recalled.
Maraño ended the interview with another reason why she used the No. 2.
“Aside sa [December] 22 ang birthday ko,” she said.
