FOR someone who had zero knowledge about basketball, including the players, Pauline Sangalang never would have imagined that she’ll end up as a member of the PBA WAGS.
Unlike most of Filipinos who are basketball-crazy, Pauline isn’t one of them. Not that she hates basketball, it wasn’t just her cup of tea.
Fate, however, had other plans for her and the social media had a big role to play in her love story with her husband, Magnolia slotman Ian Sangalang.
“Nagstart sa Instagram tapos hinanap niya ‘yung social media accounts ko, tapos nag-chat siya eh hindi ako nakikipag-usap sa mga hindi ko kilala,” Pauline told SPIN.ph during one of Magnolia’s game at the Araneta Coliseum.
“Eh ako kasi, I don’t really watch basketball so wala akong background about sa kanya,” she added. “Then one time nagkita kami sa isang place kasi may event, eh nandoon din ako, so doon lang nag-start, chit chat and all.”
As their friendship grew, Pauline and Ian eventually fell in love with each other and just last year they were blessed with their bundle of joy, Isaiah Pierre.

They’ve been together for seven years already, and Pauline is still learning about basketball and everything that comes with it.
She recalled the first time she watched the game live and it wasn’t a pleasant memory for her.
“Noong first game na nanood ako, na-injure siya, and hindi ko alam ang gagawin ko,” she shared. Sabi niya sa akin, ‘Pasok ka sa dugout, I need you’. So ako naman, ‘Parang saan ba ‘yung dugout hindi ko naman alam first time ko lang manood.’”
“Nagdadasal talaga ako, wala naman akong magagawa, support lang ako. All I can do is pray for him, pray for his teammates, it’s the least I can do,” she added.
“Nakakakaba actually win or lose kinakabahan ako kasi every game is a risk, hindi maiiwasan ‘yung injury, kaya lagi ko siyang pinagpe-pray pati ‘yung mga teammates niya. Kaya hanggang ngayon prayers lang pa rin talaga,” she continued.
The 24-year-old first-time mom, who's a registered nurse, also admitted that she gave up her work as a marketing representative but she never regretted even just a bit.
Pauline pointed out that her family comes first.
“I gave up my career to focus on our baby muna,” she said. “Dati kasi before pa ako pumasa sa board, may dumating nang opportunity [na mag-work] kaya ginrab ko na ang opportunity.”
“[Pero] sobrang nakakaproud kasi [si Ian] sobrang, as in, number one priority niya is family, he takes care of us very well, hindi siya nagkukulang,” she added.
