FILIPINO-AMERICAN comedian, Joseph Glenn Herbert Sr. aka Jo Koy has been on the receiving end of criticism due to his hosting of the 81st Golden Globe Awards.
The community dubbed his jokes as cringeworthy, with some even criticizing his decision to call out his writers in the introductory monologue, especially after the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike.

According to Jo Koy: “I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up. You’re kidding me, right? Slow down. I wrote some of these, and they’re the ones you’re laughing at.”
After his performance went viral on social media for the wrong reasons, Filipino TV personality and former volleyball player Gretchen Ho, expressed her thoughts on Jo Koy's hosting.
In her official Twitter page, the former volleyball star turned television host said, "Hosts are always, always responsible for their scripts. Whether it’s your own or not, at the end of the day, it’s your face and career on the line. This was such a huge stage, and a wasted opportunity."

But besides talking about the writers, Jo Koy made other jokes which seem to have offended the community.
One of them stemmed from his thoughts on Greta Gerwig's Barbie, which garnered a plethora of awards during that night. Viewers weren't pleased with his comparisons between Barbie and Oppenheimer.
"Oppenheimer is based on a 721 page Pulitzer Prize winning book about the Manhattan Project, and Barbie is on a plastic doll with big boobies," said Jo Koy.
Then came his joke about American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift and the National Football League (NFL), which seem to have caused a lot of stir on social media.
"The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL, on the Golden Globes we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift," as stated by Jo Koy.
Swift's reaction became the talking point as she was seen sipping alcohol, while delivering a blank stare.
