THERE’S no better job for Chico Manabat than to be the husband of volleyball star Dindin Santiago and a father to their adorable little girl, Chuchi.

It was one of those days when he had to wait for Dindin to finish their post-game huddle, but during that time it took a little longer as Foton was booted out of the semifinals race in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix.

Working as an assistant coach for National University men’s basketball team, Chico, off the court, turns into a baby sitter, personal assistant and driver but he’s not complaining though.

“‘Yun ang pinakamasarap kasi na trabaho eh,” he said. “Tawag nga nila daddy duties, [nagiging] yayo, body guard at driver driver ako. Pero ‘yun ang pinakamasarap na magagawa mo sa asawa mo na suportahan siya at saka maging daddy sa anak mo.”

Being married for four years now, Chico and Dindin have become each other’s No. 1 supporter and critic.

He revealed that being in the same circle makes it fun and exciting especially when they talk about the game afterwards.

“Syempre it’s a privilege na maging husband ng isang player kasi ako coach ako and naging athlete rin ako parang minsan kapag pinapanood ko siya mas kinakabahan ako kaysa kapag nagcocoach ako,” he revealed.

“Tapos minsan nagiging coach ako kapag nasa sasakyan na ako kasi nakikita ko ang mga mga mali niya, ang maganda sa kanya tinatanggap niya ang mga mali niya,” he added.

But after a good discussion about each other’s games, Chico and Dindin will agree on one thing - to eat a good meal.

“Kapag nag-uusap after the game, pero good discussion naman, kapag ayaw na niya yayayain na niya ako na ‘kumain na lang tayo’ pabor naman sa akin kasi gutom na rin ako,” he said laughing.

Chico also could not help but to gush over their little one.

The doting father doesn’t mind if he will be seen running after Chuchi or being silly when playing with her.

“Ngayon ok siya kasi wala kaming yaya, mas natututukan namin siya, nakakapag bonding kami,” he said. “Minsan sa kotse may gagawin siya na marerealize namin na malaki na siya, parang kailan lang.”

Although he’s not putting any pressure on his daughter, he hopes Chuchi, 2, to be a volleyball player like her mom and aunt Jaja.

“Feeling ko doon din papunta [sa sports] pero kasi ‘yung genes niya pang kay Dindin,” he said. “Kapag aalis kami na kasama siya sa practice sasabihin niya ‘work na ako’ ang tawag niya sa practice, work.”

“Maganda rin ‘yun kasi [at a young age] nakikita na niya kung paano kami magwork ng mommy niya and na-appreciate niya,” he added.
