NOWADAYS, former Barangay Ginebra cager Benny Cheng is spending his time tending to his business following a successful career in the PBA.
He is also taking time to share the word of God to anyone who wants to listen. Cheng said he is regularly sharing his faith not only to ordinary people but also to former players.
“I’m a businessman but right now, God is speaking to me to share the Gospel sa mga players,” said Cheng, a former Mapua Cardinal who had an eight-year career in the PBA after also playing for Purefoods, Sta. Lucia, and Shell.
The 49-year-old Cheng said he has developed a closer relationship with the Lord after becoming a Born Again Christian and accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior on December 9, 2001.
“What triggered me to share is one day, my pastor invited me to a visitation. We went to two places. One is in the hospital, and one is in the house. Nag-share ‘yung pastor namin sa hospital. May sinabihan siya (sa hospital), you want to accept Christ as your Lord and Savior, sabi next time na lang. Pumunta kami sa bahay na nag-share, nung una ayaw pero tumanggap din.
“After one week, namatay ‘yung nasa ospital. God gave me a big picture na ang buhay natin hindi hawak,” said Cheng.
Cheng said he feels blessed that he has a good life after basketball thanks to his relationship with God.
“Being a player, mahirap. After the contract, hindi nila alam kung saan pupunta. Only God can guide them … Until now, I accepted Christ December 9, 2001, my contract is alive. God is always there to provide my means even if I’m sick, He is always there. I always see the grace of God and giving me the salvation. 24/7, nandiyan siya,” said Cheng.
Cheng said he is encouraging current players to have a closer relationship with the Lord, as he had also experienced the struggles in life.
“I’ve been so depressed na six months, walang work. But by the grace of God, I experienced Him. Dati kasi ang Diyos sa akin, kapag kailangan ko Siya, kukunin ko Siya. Kapag hindi ko kailangan, itatabi ko. But God answered my prayer. I told him, if I signed a contract, I will go to the church. God answered. That day, I said, Lord I want to know You. I experienced God’s mercy and love,” said Cheng.
Cheng said he wants to share the Gospel to all the teams in different levels, from the professional ranks to the amateur.
“As much as possible, bigyan ako ng chance, I can share the gospel sa mga teams sa PBA, D-League, Maharlika, even college and high school,” said Cheng.
