Wiggins widens gap after ruling time trial

OLYMPIC champion Bradley Wiggins dished out the best ride in the individual time trial and tightened his hold on the overall lead in the Tour de France on Monday.

Wiggins, gold medalist in the individual and team pursuit in the Beijing Games, finished the 41.5-kilometer ride from Arc-et-Senans to Besancon in 51 minutes and 24 seconds.

His main rival Cadel Evans of Australia, who entered the race just 10 seconds off the pace, was 1:43 slower for the day.

Evans remained in second overall, but is now 1:53 behind.

Chris Froome of Britain had the second-best showing in the race against time, 35 seconds off Wiggins, to take third place overall from Vincenzo Nibali of Italy, who was 2:07 off the pace.

Froome is now 2:07 behind in the overall individual classification and NIbali 2:23 off.
