ON Wednesday, reports circulated online that the University of Santo Tomas’ Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA) director has stepped down from his post following the issue of the Growling Tigers’ Sorsogon bubble.
While some were in favor of the alleged sudden vacancy of Fr. Jannel Abogado's post, the women’s volleyball team, along with some alumni, expressed their frustration about what happened on social media.
Laure sisters Eya and EJ were among those who weighed in the issue.
“Si Father J ang isa sa mga dahilan kung bakit ako/kami nag STAY sa UST,” Eya tweeted after the news came out. She also posted a photo gallery showing her selfies and some of the team’s photos with the former athletic director, who up to yesterday had served in his position since 2017.
Players claimed that Fr. Abogado had opened a lot of opportunities for athletes and improved the sports system inside the University.
Eya and EJ’s mom, Jovie, also tweeted: “We love you Father J! Di alam ng iba anong nagawa mong [m]abuti para sa mga bata pero alam naming na inosente ka dahil alam ko kung gaano ka kahigpit lalo na sa kapakanan ng mga bata. Parang mga anak ang turing mo sa lahat, napakasakit na humantong sa ganito.”
Standout rookie Imee Hernandez, who also played for UST in the Girls' division, posted a photo of her and Fr. Abogado.
Ysa Jimenez and KC Galdones also joined the dicussion.
Sisi Rondina also offered a message to the entire UST community in the wake of the controversy currently rocking the school.
UST has yet to confirm the resignation of Fr. Abogado from his post. The school's administration is scheduled to face an investigative body on Tuesday, following its own internal investigation.
