SLOVAKIA’S Peter Sagan won a three-man sprint to win the first stage while Switzerland’s Fabian Cancellara retained the overall lead in the Tour de France, on Monday, Manila time,
The 22-year-old Sagan scored his first ever Tour stage win and Cancellara did well to defend the yellow jersey he took with a win in the prologue, while Edvald Boasson Hagen of Norway placed third.
Sagan finished the 198-kilometer ride from Liege to Seraing in Belgium in four hours, 58 minutes and 19 seconds.
Bradley Wiggins of Britain is second overall, seven seconds behind, followed by France's Sylvain Chavanel.
Last year’s champion Cadel Evans is 17 seconds behind.
The Tour goes on a mostly flat 207.5-kilometer ride across Belgium from Vise to Tournai for the second stage.
