GILAS Pilipinas and Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone served as a guest speaker in the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) general membership meeting on Wednesday at the Shangrila The Fort.

Cone delivered a talk entitled ‘Coaching Teams and Managing People’ as part of MAP’s Leaders Series, discussing his philosophies on the topic with several top executives from the corporate sector.

Incidentally, the MAP is headed by Al Panlilio, who is also the president of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP). Panlilio, who is currently the chairman of Maya Bank, was instrumental in bringing Cone to speak before MAP members.

“Next month in fact will also be interesting. Our speaker next month is a conductor from an orchestra and how does he blend an orchestra. He is a leader also. How do I now create the melody and the harmony in an orchestra? It’s another form of how do you apply leadership and management principles in different areas,” said Panlilio.

He also shared the philosophies he learned from different coaches led by Phil Jackson, who was known for the triangle offense that Cone had adapted with his teams, and the importance of bringing culture to an organization.

He also spoke about the learnings that he also adapted from several other coaches like Steve Kerr, Erik Spoelstra, and even Mike Tomlin, an American football coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL.

Cone was more than glad to share his knowledge to the business executives.

“It’s something that I’ve done quite a bit of for corporations. When Al Panlilio asked me and invited me to come here, I want to do it. It’s an easy subject for me because it’s issues on coaching. It’s something I enjoy talking about.”

The 25-time PBA champion coach and two-time grand slam winner said he has done talks with corporate people before, and each time he tries to approach it as if he is talking to his owb players.

    Classroom setting

“I just try to approach it like I come in a classroom and I’m teaching. If I think about all the other stuff like the presentation, try to impress everyone, I’m going to be super nervous. I just try to go out there and pretend like I’m talking to my players,” said Cone.

“It’s very different. But when I’m up on stage, I try to envision these guys being my players and I’m communicating with them. But once I get off that stage, it’s like I’m just a little coach amongst all these financial giants.

"I feel overwhelmed at times,” he admitted.
