AUGUST Benedicto faces a stiff challenge from several Elite newcomers when more than 800 participants will swim, bike and run when the second edition of the Tri United series returns to Playa Laiya in San Juan, Batangas on Sunday.
Tri United 2, organized by Bike King and presented by Unilab Active Health, fires off at precisely 6 a.m. for the two categories - the long distance (2-km swim–60-km bike–15-km run) and sprint distance (750M swim–20-km bike–5-km run) courses.
The resort’s beachfront will be the venue for the swim while the stretch of the San Juan Laiya road (with turnaround points at Barangay Subukin) for the bike and a shorter and hilly portion of San Juan Laiya Road (with turnaround point near the Playa Laiya residential area) for the run.
For the Male Elite title, defending overall winner Benedicto will have his hands full going up against John Chicano, Mark Hosana, Benjamin Rana, Deo Timbol and 2015 SEA Games triathlon finisher Jonard Saim.
Meanwhile, Anna Stroh, the 2014 Tri United 3 champion, is the lone competitor in the distaff side.
Notable entries in the age-group category are celebrities that include Kim Atienza, director Sid Maderazo, Matteo Guidicelli and his father Luca and sister Georgia, Paolo Abrera, Drew Arellano and Iya Villania-Arellano.
At stake in the event supported by ULAH, Landco, Enervon Activ, Hydrite, Enervon HP, ORBEA, Pocari Sweat, Saucony, TIMEX, Playa Laiya, WeatherPhilippines SwimBikeRun.ph, Multisport Magazine, RaceDay Magazine and SPIN.ph are P10,000, P6,000 and P4,000 in cash prizes for the Top 3 Elite Male and Top 3 Elite Female category winners.
Top 3 Male/Female category and team winners will receive medals and gift packs while trophies, medals and gift packs will be awarded to the Top 3 Team Competition winners.
The awarding ceremony will commence at 11:30 a.m. at the Active Health Village at Playa Laiya. For spectators and companions of participants, the two-day Tri United 2 Expo will have several booths of sponsors that will welcome them to check out their products, services and promos.
Participants meanwhile are encouraged to attend the official race briefing at Playa Laiya set at 5 p.m. on the afternoon before the race. All participants are also required to personally appear (with valid IDs) to claim their race kits on Saturday at the Playa Laiya clubhouse.
Participants may check in their bikes at the transition area on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 4 a.m. to 5:45 a.m.
Motorists and visitors are advised that on the day of the race, the bike course along San Juan Laiya Road will be closed to traffic from 6 to 10 a.m. while the run course will be closed from 8 to 11 a.m.
Visitors and guests meanwhile will have to pay a P20 tourism ecological fee that will be collected by authorized collectors at the Tourist Reception Area at Talahiban II, San Juan Batangas while those on board private cars who do not stop at the reception area shall pay their fees at the resort they will stay at.
