Keepers need short memories, says Filipinas heroine

A GOALKEEPER is one of the unpopular figures in football for obvious reasons, with the results of matches usually left in their hands.

Filipinas goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel admitted she was one of those who hated 'keepers when she was young. So it was a welcome sight during ae recent meet-and-greet event in Makati that she met a young girl who aspires to be a goalkeeper.

“It gets really hard sometimes, not everyone wants to be in that position. I didn’t want to be a goalkeeper when I was younger. Just stick to it, don’t get frustrated,” said McDaniel when asked for her advice.

Sticking to goalkeeping proved to be McDaniel’s ticket to the Philippine women’s football team, which recently made a historic campaign in the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup.

    The 25-year-old McDaniel was also named Player of the Match during the Filipinas’ historic win over New Zealand when she kept a clean sheet after Sarina Bolden scored the Philippines’ first goal in tournament history.

    McDaniel emphasized the importance of having a short memory as a goalkeeper.

    “You’ll get scored on sometimes and it’s going to be okay. But you just have to keep moving forward. There’s a quote my dad always tells me. It’s from Ted Lasso,” said McDaniel, referring to the football coach in the popular sports comedy-drama series.

    “And it said, ‘Be a goldfish.’ Have that memory of a goldfish. Always forget and keep moving forward,” said McDaniel of the Lasso quote.
