You can’t deny that we were all wrestling fans at some point. Larger than life characters settling their differences in the ring (and out of it), otherworldly finishing moves, and unforgettable catchphrases captivated us and kept us coming back for more.
While many fans have remained loyal throughout the sport’s many evolutions, some have lost interest and moved on. But whichever camp you belong to, our local wrestling scene might just be what you need to reignite your passion for wrestling—as a spectator or even as a star.
There’s actually a growing community in the country that caters to long-time fans of wrestling, as well as those who want to get started on it. The Philippine Wrestling Revolution (PWR) and its rival promotion group, Manila Wrestling Federation (MWF), have been leading the charge. They have been championing the local wrestling scene for some time now. Get to know some of their top stars and relive the magic—this time with a bit of Pinoy flavor.
If you’re looking for the ultimate highflyer like Rey Mysterio was in his prime, then look no further than Robin Sane. As his name suggests, he’s got insane aerial and acrobatic attacks that will leave you slack-jawed and screaming for more. Watch him closely because Sane is continuously improving on his skills. He’s already transformed his once-famous Swanton Bomb into an awe-inspiring 450 Splash.
The Social Media Sinister gets away with just about anything because, well, he’s that good. Ken Warren not only makes sure he’s talked about in the ring, but definitely maintains the buzz on him on social media. Be careful what you say—or he’ll layeth the smacketh down on you everywhere on the internet.
Openly gay and runs circles around his opponents, Martivo is the epitome of big dick energy. If you’re looking for an underdog character that you can completely invest in, Martivo’s your best sassy choice. Beshy! Beshy! Beshy!
Jake De Leon
Truth be told, and we’re not playing favorites here, Jake De Leon is the epitome of what a wrestler should be. He’s hailed as Mr. Philippine Wrestling, which says infinitely much about this man’s undeniable talent and dedication to his craft. At any given night, The Senyorito is more than happy to drop some alipins.
She isn’t called the “Queen of Philippine Wrestling” for nothing. Crystal shows up every night to prove that she’s more than just a pretty face and a sexy body. She can go toe-to-toe with the best of them—even against the men. Apart from her exceptional wrestling skills, her captivating personality will leave you entranced for the rest of the match. Believe us, we’ve been there.
The ladies can’t resist the Motor City Angel, Chris Panzer. And to be honest, we envy him. His heroic good looks and athleticism are the qualities he has over a number of his peers. You can’t help but root for the guy. He looks too nice. It’d be interesting to see him in a bad guy role, right?
No one really knows who’s under that luchador mask, but he must be a really sick man. Mr. Lucha went from being an underdog hero to becoming the most hated man in MWF. He turned his back against his protegé, Ashura, and backstabbed his friend Robin Sane, all in one year. At least he cuts his promos well.
He may look familiar to you because Mainstream Mahaba is Red Ollero in real life, an actor and comedian. He started out as Rederick Mahaba, but when he landed a movie role, he changed his first name to Mainstream. He’s one of the beloved characters in Philippine wrestling today because of his mean but funny antics. Arguably, Mainstream’s the best on the mic.
The ex-best friend of Mainstream Mahaba, Ralph Imabayashi is the best pure wrestler in the country. He’ll kick anyone’s teeth down their throat and grin while doing it. No heart, no remorse, Ralph Imabayashi has one goal—continue his reign as PWR Champion until he retires. And if it wasn’t obvious in his entrance video, he loves anime. Or maybe just Japan, who knows?
