These are the things you need to know about season two of The Punisher

Jan 6, 2019

We are more than thrilled that Netflix has announced the official comeback of Frank Castle as The Punisher.

Netflix released the teaser for the highly anticipated new season with the announcement that the latest batch of episodes will drop on the streaming service on the 18th of January! Let’s forget about the canceling-binge that Netflix is on, and focus on what may well be the last hoorah for this skull-wearing vigilante.

A recap: The first season of The Punisher saw Frank Castle trying to uncover a conspiracy involving his time in the military, even as he avenges, quite violently, the death of his family. All caught up so far? Good. Now, here are just some things you need to know for the next really dark season.

Who’s going to be part of the new season?

Let’s start with the obvious, with The Punisher himself, portrayed phenomenally by all-out character actor, Jon Bernthal.

Also, the maniacal big baddie of season one, Bill Russo, wil be making his return, played by the ever-so-intense Ben Barnes. But he won’t be looking as dashing as he did the last time we saw him. If you remember, he got his face smashed in by Frank, against a festival carousel mirror no less, severely disfiguring his gorgeous mug and putting him in a coma. In the comics, he devolves into an even more monstrous villain called Jigsaw.

But the Marvel Netflix team seems to have gone in a different direction. Reports say he won’t be called Jigsaw in this one. Russo’s face will be stitched up and he will be seen in a creepy mask, but his character will have a more-internal conflict going on after that blow to his humongous ego. The jigsaw puzzle he will be trying to fix is his own damaged mind.

While Amber Rose Revah and Jason R. Moore will be reprising their roles as Dinah Madani and Curtis Hoyle, respectively, some new faces are set to debut for the series. Josh Stewart will be playing John Pilgrim, a man with ruthless secrets; Giorgia Whigham is Amy Bendix, a grifter with a past; and Floriana Lima is Krista Dumont, a psychotherapist for military veterans. Recently added cast members are Corbin Bernsen as the nefarious wealthy figure Andersons Schultz and Annette O’Toole as his shifty wife Eliza.

What’s next for The Punisher?

The show will pick up where it left off in season one, with Frank Castle deciding to accept help and checking in with a veterans’ support group to continue battling his post-traumatic stress disorder. Of course, while doing that, he will still go on with putting criminals in their place and wrestling with Russo, who might not be the big bad this new season.

The season synopsis reads: “Former marine-turned-vigilante Frank Castle has been living a quiet life on the road until he suddenly becomes embroiled in the attempted murder of a young girl. As he is drawn into the mystery surrounding her and those in pursuit of the information she holds, Castle attracts a new target on his back as new and old enemies force him to confront whether he should accept his destiny and embrace life as the Punisher.”

Josh Stewart’s John Pilgrim will be the main antagonist, with reports saying his character will be an ultra-right Christian fundamentalist with a violent side to him that’s buried deep.

Of course, in season two, we will see the return of Frank Castle’s iconic vest with the skull painted on it, but this time it will mean a lot more compared to when it appeared in the first run of the show.

Let’s face it, Frank Castle wasn’t really the all-out Punisher we know from the comics. At the very least, he was just an ex-marine trying to end a conspiracy surrounding his family. But this new season, he might just lose his humanity altogether.

It will surely be a thrill to see what Russo and Pilgrim have in store for Castle, and catch just how much it will take to push him to the edge and transform him into the Punisher he was meant to be.
