SAN Sebastian's high school basketball team may have lost a brother, but it made sure that he's never forgotten.
The Golden Staglets paid tribute to fallen teammate Miguel Bonalos when they played their first game in the NCAA Season 95 juniors basketball tournament on Tuesday.
The team wore white warmers with Bonalos' surname printed on the back, as well as the number 23, Bonalos' number, on its left sleeve, when they took the court against Jose Rizal University Light Bombers at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Bonalos, 20, died of cardiac arrest back in June 30. He was a part of the squad the season before, averaging 5.8 points and 5.2 rebounds.
Golden Staglets coach Melo Banua shared that the gesture was a natural reaction for anyone who's lost a loved one.
"Siguro it's more of a natural gesture when you lose someone special, and Bon is special to us. He's not only a player to me and a teammate to his co-players, he's a family to us, and he will always be," he said.
Banua added that Bonalos will serve as an inspiration for San Sebastian moving forward as it tries to snare the juniors' title this year.
"We are dedicating this season to him. Now we have another reason to win the title," he said.
Unfortunately, the Golden Stags fell to the Light Bombers, 72-68.
